Growth doesn’t need a press release. Done right, it becomes undeniable.
Why practice
In my twenties I took a few yoga classes, felt awkward, and quit. Years later, under pressure at work, I read about an ethics lawyer with a family who still showed up for Mysore-style practice every day. His life was better because he practiced. That line moved me from someday to start now.
Two decades later, wherever I am, the mat is a constant. I show up, breathe, follow the structure, and practice. People say it should be effortless. I get the spirit, but the friction matters: stretching, wobbling, falling, returning. Letting go is its own kind of work.
It’s easy to be calm on a mountaintop. We live at ground level, deadlines, conflict, responsibility, uncertainty. For me, practice isn’t escape; it’s preparation to be my best with real people on real problems.
Leadership is the same. It isn’t status, a title, a framework, or a performance that AI can polish. Those can help us look like leaders. Practice is what makes us leaders.
Leadership is the discipline of showing up for real problems with real people, again and again, and letting the friction change us. It’s the willingness to hear feedback when it stings, to hold uncertainty when easy answers beckon, and to meet others as peers in the work, not as props for our identity.
Done long enough, practice leaves evidence, and growth becomes undeniable. You don’t have to announce it. People see it.
What I practice
- Show up before I shine. Do the work before the story.
- Choose real problems. Live challenges beat abstractions.
- Welcome friction. The stretch and wobble aren’t detours; they’re the path.
- Meet as peers. Titles down; we meet each other where we are.
- Hold head and heart together. Direct the work and stay connected in it.
- Use tools without outsourcing becoming. Frameworks and AI support; they don’t substitute.
- Return. Miss a day, come back the next. Consistency compounds.
- Seek evidence, not applause. Presence, decisions, and results tell the truth over time.
- Tell the truth. About constraints, money, commitments, mistakes, reality first.
- Serve beyond self. Leadership exists to create value with and for others.
How this shapes my work
My own practice. I run a lean, honest practice: contact with reality daily, outreach before optics, commitments before comfort. Body on the mat; mind in the work. I protect time for what matters, and I keep returning.
Coaching, assessment, and calibration. I don’t sell performance; I offer practice. Coaching focuses on what is live and consequential. Assessments are rigorous mirrors—strengths, blind spots, readiness. Calibration is when we stop spinning and decide. Every engagement produces moves you can make now and learning you carry forward.
LeaderBridge. LeaderBridge is the dojo, a structured place to practice leadership on real challenges with peers. We use a simple loop, DOER-R™ (Define, Own, Enlist, Resolve, Reinforce), to keep the work honest and moving in three formats: 1-on-1, open thread, and peer circle (leaderless). Status is stripped. Feedback is candid. Reflection is built in. We measure growth with two signals:
- Ongoing peer credits during the work (for Driving, Connecting, and the relevant Skill).
- Impact ratings after the work (estimated now; actual later).
Over time those signals form a trail, your evidence.
leadership.NET community. We hold a shared standard: practice over posture, peers over props, friction over shortcuts, evidence over performance. We show up, together, and we return.
The promise I make
I will keep practicing, on the mat, in my company, and with every leader I serve. I’ll choose reality over avoidance, action over theatrics, learning over ego. I’ll let the work change me, and invite others to do the same.
Becoming a leader is becoming a person; becoming a person is becoming a leader.
